Former Google Employees Create Cuil New Search Engine

added by Michael on 28 Jul 2008

Raising 33 Million dollars in venture capital from Greylock, former Google employees Anna Patterson, Russel Power and Louis Monier joined Tom Costello of IBM to create Cuil, a new search engine that claims to have a larger index than even Google.

It received a fair amount of criticism when it debuted: slow response times, unfocused results.

From Computer World:

Cuil said its search engine goes beyond traditional approaches by analyzing the context of each page and the concepts behind each query so it can provide better rankings by content rather than popularity. Cuil then organizes similar results into groups and sorts them by category. It also offers tabs to clarify subjects, as well as suggestions on how to refine searches.
