Generic POP, IMAP and Settings

posted on Saturday, August 2, 2008 by Michael

For most domains, the following generic mail configuration may be used on any mail client or mobile device connecting via POP3 or IMAP:

POP SETTINGS

Server Name

pop.yourdomainname.com

User Name

yourfullemailaddress@domain.com

Password

Your assigned password

SMTP SETTINGS

Server Name

smtp.yourdomainname.com

User Name

yourfullemailaddress@domain.com

Password

Your assigned password

Note

You need to check off "my outgoing mail server requires authentication"

Note: Many internet service providers actively block you from sending mail through third parties. You may need to contact your ISP and use their outgoing mail server. Bellsouth, for example, would use "mail.bellsouth.net", and Comcast would use "mail.comcast.net". Most ISPs do NOT require "my outgoing mail server requires authentication" since you connect to the internet via their network.

If you use a satellite connection, as many yachts do, then you would absolutely want to use your ISP's SMTP server.

As an alternative, if you are experiencing difficulty sending mail through our SMTP servers and don't want to use your ISP's SMTP server, you can try changing the outgoing port from 25 to 587.
